Management Team & Trustees
Jeff Champney-Smith was appointed Chair of Brynawel Rehab in 2013 after serving four years as a Trustee. Jeff worked in the NHS in Cardiff for many years as a nurse specialising in substance use. His interests included; dual diagnosis, motivational interviewing, evidence-based practice and the aesthetic nature of nursing practice. He continues to have an interest in ensuring people with substance use issues have access to appropriate, recovery focused, evidence-based interventions. Jeff is also a Mental Health Act Manager for Cardiff and Vale Local Health Board.
I was brought up in Pontypridd, educated at Pontypridd Boys Grammar School,Nottingham, Bristol and Glamorgan and worked for 30 years in south Wales in various roles in social services departments before joining the National Assembly for Wales in 2001. Following my retirement as head of the Substance Misuse Policy Development Team I joined the Brynawel Board of Trustees in 2011. I live in Efail Isaf.
Following a successful career in the probation service where I worked as a Director of HR and Business Development, I am now employed as Deputy Chief Executive and Resources Manager for One Voice Wales an organisation representing local councils in Wales. I have served on many Boards and Committees and was formerly a member of the Wales Employment and Skills Board. I am highly committed to my work as a Trustee of Brynawel and I strongly believe that everyone who has dependency problems should have the opportunity of turning things around for their personal benefit and those of their family and associates.

Melys is a Human Resource and Organisational Development professional with over 20 years managementexperience across the public, voluntary and third sectors. Previously she qualified as a social worker and spent many years as service manager resettling people with challenging behaviour from long stay institutions.
Currently she is working as a freelance consultant delivering a wide range of complex organisational, leadershipand management development projects. Melys has previously held a public appointment with Cardiff Community Health Council.
‘Making a difference’ and developing people is fundamental to what drives me. I believe that the work that Brynawel does in invaluable as given the’ right support at the right time’, people can really turn their lives around.
Leigh is currently the national coordinator for UK SMART Recovery in Wales. Previously she has worked as a substance misuse worker for CAIS in Pembrokeshire.
I am also a person in my seventh year of recovery from alcohol addiction and an ex client of Brynawel Rehab.I left Brynawel in 2010 after a 5 month stay and have never looked back. I took what I learnt and put it into practice.
I am very passionate about recovery not just my own but helping others in theirs.
Trustee - Company Secretary
I am a Registered General Nurse, a Registered Mental Health Nurse and someone who has a BSc (Hons) in Community Mental Health Studies. I have worked in the field of substance misuse for over 20 years in the NHS and independent sector.
Tamsin is a Civil Servant and outside of work is a keen gardener and cyclist. Tamsin is a member of Brynawel Rehabs Finance Committee.

Dr Roger Thomas is a Consultant Forensic Psychologist working in South Wales.
